Spam Hammer

What is Spam Hammer

Spam Hammer utilizes graylisting to help customers limit emails received from spammers. Graylisting is when an email is temporarily rejected, but it will be accepted if the email is resent after sufficient time. Spammers do not normally attempt to resend rejected emails because they're sending to thousands of email addresses.

How do I enable Spam Hammer?

Although Spam Hammer will stop many spam emails from reaching you, there is a possibility of blocking legitimate emails from reaching your account as well. Please take this into consideration before enabling Spam Hammer. To begin, you will need to log in to your Bluehost control panel.

Note: Legacy accounts will feature a horizontal navigation bar at the top of the screen, while Bluerock account users will see a vertical navigation menu on the left-hand side of the screen. If you are still unsure what interface your account uses, please see Bluerock vs. Legacy to determine which step to follow.

Rock

  1. Click the Advanced tab from the side navigation menu to the left.
  2. From the Email section, open Spam Filters.
  3. Configure settings to your preference.

Legacy

  1. Click the Hosting tab from the menu at the top of your screen.
  2. From the Email section, select Spam Hammer
  3. You can select to enable Spam Hammer on all email addresses for individual domains or on individual email addresses.
  4. Click Save.

You will be unable to select any domain that already has SpamExperts. In this case, Spam Hammer cannot be used because the SpamExperts mail servers are already whitelisted.

Processing New Emails and Marking as Spam

If your Apache SpamAssassin is enabled, this will mark suspicious email messages as spam. The server will update the header of new messages whose calculated spam score exceeds the Spam Threshold Score (5).

Moving New Spam to a Separate Folder (Spam Box)

Spam Box is disabled by default. Enable this option to mark suspicious emails as spam. When you enable this option, the server will mark new email messages with a calculated spam score greater than the Spam Threshold Score (5) as spam and place them in a separate spam folder for you to review. Then click Configure Spam Box Settings.

Automatically Deleting New Spam (Auto-Delete)

Auto-Delete is disabled by default. Enable this option to automatically delete spam messages. The Auto-Delete option permanently deletes new emails with a calculated spam score greater than the Auto-Delete Threshold Score. We recommend that you use Spam Box instead of Auto-Delete because Spam Box allows you to recover messages that you delete unintentionally. Click Configure Auto-Delete Settings.

Additional Configurations (For Advanced Users)

Most users will not need to customize these settings. These settings will allow you to configure the Whitelist, Blacklist, and Calculated Spam Score email settings. Click Show Additional Configurations.

Note: Although Spam Hammer will stop many SPAM emails from reaching you, there is a possibility of blocking legitimate emails from reaching your account as well. Please take this into consideration before enabling Spam Hammer.
