How to Copy or Rename a Database

Copying a Database

To copy a database, you will need to export the original database and then import it into a new database.

You may also check on How To Copy A Database Using PHPMyAdmin for another method.

How to Export the Original Database

  1. Log in to your Bluehost control panel.
  2. Under the Database section, select phpMyAdmin.
    Name of the article
  3. Look for the database you wish to export. You may expand the list by clicking the button on the left.
  4. Click on the specific database name from the left sidebar.
    phpmyadmin-export
  5. Click Export at the top.
  6. Select the Export method you wish to use.
  7. Choose the file Format in the drop-down box.
  8. Click Go. This will download a .sql file to your computer.

How to Import onto a New Database

  1. Create a new database in cPanel.
  2. Go to phpMyAdmin.
  3. Click the new database name.
    phpmyadmin-import
  4. Click Import in the main area of phpMyAdmin.
  5. Select Choose File.
  6. Select the database you imported earlier from the drop-down box and click Go.

Note: phpMyAdmin will timeout after 30 seconds of attempting to import.
If you experience this timeout, you will need to import your database using SSH. For assistance, please review Importing Databases via Command Line (SSH).

For security reasons, it's best to upload your database to the /home/USERNAME section of your account. (Replace USERNAME with your account username.)

Renaming a Database

The only available way to rename a database is to follow the above direction and import the database to a new, empty database with the desired name.
